Cotter Pin Application Steps:
Insert pintle through top hole
Slide the pintle into the top hole of the rudder cheek tabs.
Position the spring and washer
Place the spring in the middle of the cheek tabs. Set the washer on top of the spring. Continue sliding the pintle down so it goes through the washer and spring.
Compress the spring
Using vise grips (or strong hands), press the washer downward to compress the spring. This will expose the cotter pin hole on the pintle just above the washer.
Install the cotter pin
While holding the washer down, insert the cotter pin fully through the hole.
Release the spring
Slowly release pressure. The washer will seat firmly below the cotter pin, and the bottom of the spring will rest on the lower cheek tab.
Retaining Ring Application Steps
Check pintle shaft
Make sure there’s a machined groove in the shaft where the retaining ring can seat. If not, it can’t be used without modification.
Install spring and washer
Slide pintle through top hole, position spring and washer as before.
Compress spring
Push washer down until the groove on the pintle is exposed.
Apply retaining ring
Use snap ring pliers to open the ring slightly and slide it over the pintle until it clicks into the groove.
Release spring
The washer will push up against the retaining ring, keeping everything secure.
