Installing a Sunfish Gudgeon with an Aluminum Backing Plate

Included

• Gudgeon bracket

• Aluminum backing plate (untapped)

• #10-32 stainless screws (1.75" long)

• Stainless steel lock washers

You Need

• Drill with #21 bit (0.159")

• #10-32 tap and T-handle

• Marine sealant

• Small amount of oil (for tapping)

• Screwdriver

Steps

1. Mark Holes

   • Hold the gudgeon on the transom and mark the screw holes.

2. Drill

   • Hold the aluminum plate inside the boat where it will go.

   • Drill through the hull and plate with the #21 bit.

3. Tap the Plate

   • Remove the plate.

   • Using the #10-32 tap, turn it slowly into each hole to cut threads.

   • Use a drop of oil, and back the tap out every few turns to clear chips.

   • This step is needed because your screws are flat-tipped and need threads to hold, no nuts are used.

4. Seal

   • Apply marine sealant to the hull holes and the back of the gudgeon.

5. Install

   • Put the plate back inside the hull so holes line up.

   • Place a lock washer under each screw head.

   • Tighten screws into the tapped plate until snug. Do not overtighten.

6. Finish

   • Wipe off extra sealant. Let it cure before using the boat.
